Life as a Freelance Lash Tech
Tee Wrecks, owner @TeeWrecksBeauty on Instagram sheds light on the highs & lows of running her own beauty business and why her passion is worth the effort.
By Paris Mielke, CEO @pairiapp.
Tee, the owner at TeeWrecksBeauty was certified as a cosmetologist in 2017 and as a lash technician in 2019 after training at in Twin Falls, ID at Master Educators and Bella Lash, respectively.
The state of Idaho requires 2000 hours for a cosmetology license, which took her about 2(ish) years. She decided to continue her education and start doing lashes because of a hunch that she would enjoy it as she likes to do intricate work. The choice was ultimately to expand her education but she ended up finding her passion!
What is your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part about cosmetology in general is making the client feel excited and self confident! Nothing beats the look on a client's face when you've made them feel beautiful.
Why do you choose to work for yourself?
I don't dislike working for people, but I have always been an independent person. The thing I like the most is being able to make my own schedule in my own workspace the way that I want it.
What are the most difficult parts about starting up your lash business?
The start of building clientele is definitely a slow process. As a new lash technician I have definitely noticed how difficult it is to bring in new clientele. It is not impossible though! I'm getting busier and busier every week, it just takes persistence.
How have you worked to overcome these difficulties?
Advertising, advertising, advertising! Between social media and leaving business cards throughout town, it DOES make a big difference. Also, posting before and after photos on your social media. Let people see the work that you have done!
What advice would you give other young aspiring cosmetologists who want to freelance?
Post all of your work,
Even if you don't think it's a 100% perfect.
Never give up,
Even when you feel like nothing is happening.
Be kind to others,
Don't put anyone else down to bring yourself up.
And last but not least,
DON'T BE SO HARD ON YOURSELF!
We are all human, we all make mistakes.
Learn from it and move on!
Don't trip over stuff that's behind you.
